London Theatre |
London is one of the great theatre centres of the world.
The venues in London's West End (sometimes known as 'Theatreland') produce some of the finest
pieces of entertainment in the world, so much so that it has been considered 'Better than Broadway'.
Outside of the city centre there is also a healthy 'Fringe Theatre' culture. Similarly, there is
popular support for repertory theatre.

West End Theatre
When most people think of theatre in London they are generally thinking about
those in the West End's 'Theatreland'.
Situated between Oxford Street and Piccadilly Circus, this area contains such theatre gems
as the London Palladium, the Dominion and the Prince Edward Theatre. Such venues are, and
have been responsibe, for shows the likes of We Will Rock You, Grease, Mary Poppins and
Les Miserables.

Fringe Theatre
Fringe Theatre generally refers to independent, locally based theatre companies.
Being based very much in the suburbs the shows at fringe theatres tend to have a
'local' feel to them. Many of the performers live locally, and indeed may be amateurs.
Also the plays are often reflect local concerns and interests. However there will
often be times when popular West End Shows appear at these venues.

Repertory Theatre
Repertory theatre is where a single company puts on a variety of plays one after
another for short periods. Shows usually last between a week and a fortnight.
Often they are subsidised. This allows these theatres risks experimenting
with new and unknown actors and writers, as well as plays that won't appeal to a wide audience.
Popular repertory theatre companies include the National Theatre and the Globe Theatre.
